Digging Deep into the Revelation of Jesus Christ is a must have
one-of-a-kind reference for anyone striving to understand the book of
Revelation in the Bible. In my own Bible studies, I found this book to be an
immense time saver. Through the format and contents, I am able to find comprehensive
information in a few minutes versus spending an hour looking up
cross-references to find meaning in challenging text. In short, this valuable
guide for the book of Revelation is as a decoder ring in a box of cereal. The
ring does not interpret, rather provides a reader the ability to gain insights
quickly.
As the only apocalyptic document in the New Testament the book of Revelation to
John is literally meant to be unveiling, but for most of us it is confusing.
How many times do you read your Study Bible, then look at the notes in the
center section, then commentary at the footnotes, then leaf back to another
reference, etc. etc.? In the end, you are so off track, you forgot what it was
you were originally looking for. In Digging Deep, Mike Copple has solved this
problem for the Book of Revelation. It is not in itself a commentary or study
guide, rather is a well thought out compilation of Biblical texts and
commentary from reliable sources which are completely cross-referenced on the
same page. The scripture is taken from the New King James Version of the Bible,
with commentary from The Believer’s Bible Commentary, The King James Study
Bible, and numerous other well known and respected authors.
The 8.5 x 11 inch format is useful without having the bulk of several Bibles
and commentaries. At 3/8 inch thick, Digging Deep contains on each page the
original scripture, the commentary on that scripture, the actual Bible verses
referenced in the commentary, and the commentary on these references. For someone
studying Revelation, this one reference saves time and enhances understanding
without making the mistake of translating scripture. This enables the reader to
make his/her own conclusions about the meaning in the Word as inspired by God.
In a future Bible study on Revelation, I can see myself cutting off the spine
of this book, punching three holes on the left side, and putting these pages
into a three ring binder to serve as the reference alongside my written log of
notes, thoughts and prayers.
As a final thought, I found the description of Digging Deep on-line a bit
perplexing for two reasons. I had not used a reference that provides 4 levels
of interrelated commentary with the original scripture … so this was more like
a study reference on steroids. Secondly, Mike Copple in his humility offers no
personal insights into the scripture references. He relies on God to do the
talking. As this is challenging for me to explain, I hope the following example
will make this point.
To understand the format and content of this guide, I have provided an excerpt
from Revelations 7:9 found on pages 24-25 in this Digging Deep into the
Revelation of Jesus Christ:
Page 24, Column 1 – “9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great
multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and
tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white
robes, with palm branches in their hands,”
Page 24, Column 2 – Commentary on Rev 7:9-12 “Verse 9 compared to Revelation
5:11 confirms the Rapture takes place prior to the Tribulation (Romans 11:25)…
Facing Page 25, Column 3 – Verses from Commentary, Revelation 5:11 “Then I
looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne …” Romans 11:25
“For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery …”
Facing Page 25, Column 4 – Commentary on Verses in Column 3 – In Revelation
5:11, even many angels joined the living creatures and the elders to praise the
Lamb for His glory and wisdom. Romans 11:25 agrees with Revelation 4:1 that the
Church has been raptured and will already be there to witness the many Gentiles
who will be saved during the Tribulation. David is in prayer in Psalm 3:8
asking God to bless his people by continuing to show them His marvelous
deliverance.
